Udyr, The Animal Spirit

The mystics of Ionia delve into the deepest mysteries of Valoran, pioneering the most inner depths of spirituality. Their adepts are some of the most devout proponents of enlightenment and harmony... but as is always the case, there are those who follow a very different path. Born in a grassy clearing under a red moon, Udyr has always been compelled by the primal drive within him. His will was not untempered, simply undomesticated. As a boy, he toiled on his father's farm, but he felt a much deeper connection with the mustangs that would graze in the distant fields than with the townsfolk who would visit. Oftentimes he was dragged into the house at night with a swat and a scolding when his parents would find him sleeping beneath the stars.

On the day of his sixteenth birthday, Udyr bade his family farewell and struck a path to the east, determined to shed the trappings of civilized society. Freed of the shackles of cultural expectations, Udyr tapped into a well of inner ferocity he hadn't known before. His feral senses roiled to the surface and he let them overcome him. It was at this point in his life that Udyr truly lost his humanity. Poachers and travelers who entered his territory did so at terrible risk, and rarely managed to leave it.

A monk on a long journey passed through his woods one day, and Udyr decided to scare him, leaping from a nearby brush. The monk casually turned and redirected Udyr to one side. Udyr, enraged, tried time and time again to best him, but the monk was unassailable. When Udyr was exhausted, the monk wordlessly beckoned him to follow, and together they walked in silence to the Hirana Monastery. The monks there took him in, and taught him to harness and control his animalistic fury... most of the time.

"Weapons are for the weak." - Udyr

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Overview:

Udyr is a very versatile champ. He can off tank, jungle, chase, gank, initiate, push, etc. I personally think hes one of the strongest junglers in the game, if not the strongest. His ability to stay at high hp throughout the jungle, drop dragon early and fast, as well as gank effectively make him incredibly powerful. There are many ways to play Udyr, but im only going to go over what i find to be the most effective. Hes the original W>E>R spammer...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Summoner Spells:

I personally find Smite and Flash to be the best for Udyr. Between bear stance and Trinity Force, you have more then enough run speed that Ghost isnt needed. Flash has saved my life, and also put me in position for bear stance stuns numerous times. Smite is obvious for jungling, so i dont really see summoner spells as negotiable, they two are more or less mandatory.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Runes:

I choose the following runes for the following reasons. Armor pen marks to help with damage both in jungle and when ganking. Armor seals to help when starting jungle, as well as general tankability (Dodge seals are also viable). Magic resist per level glyphs since you dont need any magic resist early game, but more so mid/late game where per level glyphs will surpass flat magic resist glyphs. Finally flat health Quins since it will help with early jungling considerably, and as an off tank HP is always mandatory.

Marks: Greater Mark of Desolation x9 (1.66 armor penetration)
Seals: Greater Seal of Resilience x9 (1.41 armor)
Glyphs: Greater Glyph of Shielding x9 (.15 magic resist per level.)
Quintessences: Greater Quintessence of Fortitude x3 (+26 health)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Masteries:

Offense:
1/1 Plentiful Bounty

Defense:
3/3 Resistance
3/3 Hardiness
4/4 Evasion
1/1 Nimbleness
2/2 Defensive Mastery
1/3 Harden Skin
4/4 Veterans Scars

Utility:
3/3 Perserverance
4/4 Awareness
1/1 Greed
2/2 Utility Mastery

I choose a 1/18/11 Mastery build for the following reasons. First off, going full 21 defense i find to be a waste, you miss out on too much. You would be unable to get 2/2 Utility mastery, which is a jungling priority in my opinion. Plentiful bounty nor greed are mandatory, but i dont find anything else worthy of the points. Greed isnt amazing, i understand that, its about 240 gold in a 40 min game, not amazing, but i just dont find anything more helpful. Same with plentiful bounty, the 5g isnt a big deal, but the reduced cooldown on smite is helpful while jungling. Awareness is also mandatory for jungling, its not uncommon for me to outlevel my mid and top solo lanes. Defensive mastery, and harden skin are also great for jungling, coupled with your high armor, wolves ghosts and all the small hitters in jungle dont even phase you. Resistance and Hardiness are just obvious choices for a offtank.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Abilities:

Monkeys Agility:
(Innate): Udyr's attack speed is increased by 10% and dodge chance by 3% for 5 seconds each time he switches stances. This effect can stack up to 3 times. Switching stances sets off a 1.5 second global cooldown.

Tiger Stance:
(Stance) - Activation: On his next attack, Udyr swipes at his target, making a normal attack and dealing 170% of his attack damage + extra damage over 2 seconds as magic damage. In addition, Udyr gains an attack speed buff that lasts 5 seconds for 5% less than his persistent attack speed, making his total increased attack speed 75%(35%+40%) at max level.

Persistent effect: Udyr's attack speed is increased.
Cooldown: 6 seconds.
Cost: 75 / 65 / 55 / 45 / 35 Mana
Extra Damage: 30 / 80 / 130 / 180 / 230
Attack Speed: 20 / 25 / 30 / 35 / 40 %

Turtle Stance:
(Stance) - Activation: Udyr gains a shield, for 5 seconds, that absorbs damage.

Persistent effect: Udyr's attacks cannot crit, but he restores a percentage of his damage as health and mana.
Cooldown: 6 seconds
Cost: 75 / 65 / 55 / 45 / 35 Mana
Damage Absorbed: 60 / 100 / 140 / 180 / 220 (+0.5 per ability power)
Health Restored: 12 / 14 / 16 / 18 / 20 %
Mana Restored: 9 / 10.5 / 12 / 13.5 / 15 %

Bear Stance:
(Stance) - Activation: Udyr gains increased movement speed for a few seconds.

Persistent effect: Udyr mauls his target with such force that they are stunned for 1 second. This effect can only occur once every 6 seconds on the same target.
Cooldown: 6 seconds
Cost: 75 / 65 / 55 / 45 / 35 Mana
Movement Speed: 15 / 18 / 21 / 24 / 27 %
Duration: 2 / 2.5 / 3 / 3.5 / 4 seconds

Phoenix Stance:
(Stance) - Activation: Udyr sends out pulsing waves of fire dealing magic damage each second to nearby enemies for 5 seconds. In addition, during this time Udyr's ability power is increased and his attack damage is increased by half of that amount.

Persistent effect: Every third attack, Udyr engulfs the enemies in front of him in flames, dealing magic damage.
Cooldown: 6 seconds
Cost: 75 / 65 / 55 / 45 / 35 Mana
Waves' Magic Damage: 10 / 18 / 26 / 34 / 42 (+0.25 per ability power)
Ability Power: 16 / 24 / 32 / 40 / 48
Attack Damage: 8 / 12 / 16 / 20 / 24
Third Attack Magic Damage: 40 / 80 / 120 / 160 / 200 (+0.25 per ability power)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Skilling Order:

Level 1 - Phoenix Stance
Level 2 - Turtle Stance
Level 3 - Phoenix Stance
Level 4 - Bear Stance
Level 5 - Phoenix Stance
Level 6 - Turtle Stance
Level 7 - Phoenix Stance
Level 8 - Turtle Stance
Level 9 - Phoenix Stance
Level 10 - Turtle Stance
Level 11 - Turtle Stance
Level 12 - Bear Stance
Level 13 - Bear Stance
Level 14 - Bear Stance
Level 15 - Bear Stance
Level 16 - Tiger Stance
Level 17 - Tiger Stance
Level 18 - Tiger Stance

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Items:

Starting items - Cloth armor and 5 Health Potions.
Upon hitting level four, buy Boots of Speed and gank with bear stance.
Finish Madreds Razors and finally Wriggles Lantern asap.
Build Mercury's Treads from Boots of speed asap.
Now you want to get some utility going. Trinity Force is generally my next item. Rushing Sheen first for ganks.
After Trinity force, depends on what champs the other team has that are doing well. I generally go with Banshees Veil if they're balanced since it add health and stops an attack every 45 seconds which can stop a stun/root etc that could cost u a kill. If they're very AD heavy, i go with a Sunfire cape next instead, regardless i almost always get both, just depends on the other team as to which i get. Final item depends on ur role in the team, if you're getting focused, if you're carrying and not dying.

Mercury's Treads:
+25 Magic Resistance
Passive:
UNIQUE: Enhanced Movement 2
UNIQUE - Reduces the duration of stuns, slows, taunts, fears, snares, sleeps, and immobilizes by 35%.

Wriggle's Lantern:
+23 Attack Damage
+30 Armor
+14% Life Steal
Passive:
UNIQUE: 20% chance on attack to deal 500 damage to a minion.
Active UNIQUE: Places an invisible ward with 1100 range sight and lasts for 3 minutes. 3 minute cooldown.

Trinity Force:
+30 Attack Damage
+30 Ability Power
+30% Attack Speed
+15% Critical Strike Chance
+12% Movement Speed
+250 Health
+250 Mana
Passive:
UNIQUE: 25% chance on hit to slow the target by 35% for 2.5 seconds; on cast, increases your base Attack Damage by 150% for one attack.

Banshee's Veil:
+375 Health
+375 Mana
+50 Magic Resistance
Passive:
UNIQUE: Blocks one negative spell every 45 seconds.

Sunfire Cape:
+450 Health
+45 Armor
Passive:
UNIQUE: Deals 40 Magic Damage a second to nearby enemies.

Final Item Possibilities:
For the final item on Udyr, aside from Elixir's its dependant on who you're facing, and how you're doing. If you're forced into more of a main tank role, then they're three options. First, against balanced teams, Guardian Angel is an amazing option, high defense, and reincarnation. Second, if they're AP heavy, you can grab yourself a Force of Nature to stack magic resist. Third, they're AD heavy, get yourself Randuin's Omen, high armor as well as an attack speed slow. Final situation is you're wrecking their team, and you want an offensive item. Best item i find is Atma's Impaler, still gives you a defensive stat with the armor, but also a ton of damage with your high health.

Guardian Angel:
+68 Armor
+38 Magic Resistance
Passive:
UNIQUE: Revives your Champion upon death, restoring 750 Health and 375 Mana. This effect can only occur once every 5 minutes.

Force of Nature:
+76 Magic Resistance
+40 HP Regen/5 sec.
+8% Movement Speed
Passive:
UNIQUE: Restores 0.35% of your champions maximum health every second.

Randuin's Omen:
+300 Health
+80 Armor
+ 25 Health Regen/5 sec.
Passive:
UNIQUE: 5% Cooldown Reduction and 20% chance on being hit to slow the attacker's movement and attack speed by 35% for 3 seconds.
Active UNIQUE: Slows movement speed and attack speed of surrounding units by 35% for 2 second + 0.5 seconds for each 100 Armor and Magic Resist. 60 second cooldown.

Atma's Impaler:
+45 Armor
+18% Critical Strike Chance
Passive:
UNIQUE: Your physical damage is increased by 2% of your maximum health.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jungling:
They're many routes to take, and i honestly suggest finding your own. I generally start at double golems with phoenix stance since most people expect you at blue golem, so you wont get ganked early. Double golems will get you level 2, i also use smite on the first golem im attacking. Then i grab turtle stance and run to ghosts, pop turtle stance, hit the big ghost, then switch back to phoenix, and finish clearing. Run over to wolves, kill big wolf with your phoenix stance still on, then swap to turtle to get yourself nearly full mana/life so you can kill blue golem next. Wolves will level you to 3, get phoenix again, and go kill blue golem.
After that blue golem you'll be out of health potions at this point, but that's fine, you're now powerful enough and have the mana from blue to continue on without them. Go back to double golems which should be up, get level 4, get bear stance and go get your boots. If you want a health potion, and to drop lizard so that you have extra damage and a slow for your gank, go for it. Once you get a gank in, go finish off what jungle creeps you can, get level 6 and a wriggles lantern, then go do dragon (dragon is doable earlier, but for people not experienced with Udyr, i would follow these instructions) Just make sure to keep up your monkey's agility stacks on dragon, with spamming W and R back and forth (you may need to steal their blue to keep stacks up).

THANKS!
Thanks for reading my guide, and official entry into ROFLmanMAN's guide contest. I main Udyr, easily have the most champs wins with Udyr on my account if i went into normal games. I feel like i know this champ better then most. I find hes highly under rated considering most people play him wrong. Whether it be going tiger stance or pure DPS, laning instead of jungling, or just being bad in general. Udyr's main redeeming factor is the fact that hes been seen on the headlining LoL matches where Udyr carries the team. The noxus vs Ionia match where Udyr shit on the whole team late game. Linked here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQQQBRPImo8&feature=related (note: That game took place 3 months ago, when Innervating Locket was still inthe game) Also in the recent tourney's an Udyr did exceptionally well again, getting some of the limelight back on this under appreciated champ. Hope you learned and enjoyed it!

Phoenix is a 1pt wonder when it comes to jungle udyr.
Hybrid jungling/tiger jungling is faster, and more efficient.

But its a nice guide, and well written, thought out, displayed, and I like it.
Well done :)
