languages aren't that hard. the hard part is the framework and trying to accomplish what you wanna do.

Among my favorites is Clojure, it's a LISP that runs on the JVM. There's a lot of interop with Java, so you can learn a bit of that, too!

Yup, I guess there is no such a thing as a hard web language. As @carteblanche already said, the hard parts could be frameworks, external libraries etc. Popular languages, such as PHP, have a lot of frameworks with good documentations which are mostly pretty easy (quick) to learn, but some other languages are not that popular and its frameworks are not that well documented (they also couldn't have some external libraries which makes coding easier and cleaner ), so it takes some time to understand their mechanisms cause u have to look to the code very often...But that's just my personal opinion, I was coding only in PHP/JS/Java ;d

BTW. Why is this web programming section so "poor"? ;d

i wouldnt really say a particular language is hard, its learning your first thats the hardest. after your first, others are easy because they are all similar, just some different structures and syntax, but the basics remain the same. i cant comment on the frameworks part, as ive never used a framework.

what the point in a hard programming language, the point of computing anything is to make it easy :/

try using HAML or Rails it should be a good take on web languages.

Yes, but assuming that he's a beginner, I would suggest him PHP, it's pretty popular language so he'll be able to find a lot of information on it, or help.
