I tend to laugh at national candidates for Libertarians. The inability to pivot for general is the same issue the GOP has only on less popular reforms. If you can't get off the "we will abolish the IRS" wagon you won't get elected. If you can't get off the "Roe v. Wade comes off the books in the first 100 days" wagon you won't get elected.
But ushering local govts to work mostly as oversight with some help to local organizations works well. Libertarians are effective up to, but not exceeding, governors IMO. Depending on the state perhaps not even governor, California for example. But there could be an extraordinary candidate who breaks the tropes, its just not Johnson.
