Basically, a lot of people in rural Colorado are tired of liberal urbanites dictating policies to them. Colorado is a state whose government is heavily slanted towards the predominately left-wing urban population, leaving the rural population with no real influence or say in government. To make matters worse, the left-wing government has recently passed tax increases that only apply to those living in rural areas and banning guns. As thus, the good people of Northern Colorado want to secede and become a new state. Do you think they should become a state?

One corner of rural Colorado is so fed up with the leftward lurch of our state that county leaders are talking secession by creating the 51st state.

Weld County Commissioners say other leaders in northeastern Colorado are ready to go with them, citing concerns that they are being ignored on issues like energy and agriculture.

"Our very way of life is under attack," Weld County Commissioner Sean Conway said on Thursday.

The Republican says Wednesday's signing of Senate Bill 252 by Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper, which critics say would increase rates for only rural Colorado while at the same time promoting renewable energy, was the last straw.

"That is a direct assault on rural Colorado," Weld County Commissioner Mike Freeman said.

At a recent meeting of county commissioners from all over the state, Conway says roughly 10 counties warmed to the idea of a petition to create a new state.

"That state would be the state of Northern Colorado," Conway said.

I think it would be an incredibly stupid decision.

This would actually make sense. Southern Cali is worlds different than Norcal.

That isn't the issue. The issue is that a bunch of legislators from urban Colorado, in their push to be green, didn't take their rural counterparts into the considerations for the bill, and forced it on just rural areas. It's akin to taxation without representation in principle.

Their population is way too small to constitute an entire state.

The area is larger than DC though.

I wouldnt have a problem with them leaving colorado if that is what they want. Voluntary association and all.
An issue would be national representation however. Should a few counties in Colorado get 2 senators like everyone else?

They're a state just like any other, so yes. The senate has nothing to do with population.

DC isn't a state, it is a city. It doesn't have a senator or a governor....it has a mayor and a congressman.

Also I'm not sure that Southern Colorado will consent to being ripped in half.
