These threads are getting popular today so I thought I would share an analogy of guns that I have been thinking of for a long time.
In chemistry there is something called the "activation energy", the amount of energy required for a reaction to start. This can be viewed of as the ignition spark for your engine or grill. The fuel will eventually all oxidize into CO2 and H2O without this spark, it will just take a very very long time. If you add the spark, all of the fuel that is available will burn. If you increase the activation energy the reaction proceeds slower, lower it and it goes faster. I like to think of gun laws as increasing the activation energy where the reaction would be considered to be a shooting. Shootings will still happen, but there will be less of them.
Feel free to laugh art me, this is just my personal way of viewing the situation.
