I find it odd that euthanasia is illegal for someone suffering from say locked in syndrome but its perfectly legal to pull the plug on a coma patient which is effectively murder

In one case we deny the request to die and in the other we kill the patient without their consent citing a number of reasons, usually financial constraints, percieved suffering, pain etc.

Thoughts?

Get a will written up specifically covering vegetative state, comas, and your specific requests so people don't have to play roll the dice on your life.

In passive euthanasia is a disease or medical condition killing a person.

In active euthanasia it is a person killing another person.

It would drastically alter the concept of doctor as well and throw out the Hippocratic oath of doing no harm.

Unless it could be argued that performing no action would cause more harm than ending the subject's life. Similar to the way a utilitarian can argue that assassinating Hitler before he had rose to power would have been "good".

euthanasia is only legal in 2-3 states iirc and only if 6 months terminal. kinda sucks. i think assisted suicide in general should be legal. luckily it's still legal in other countries.

If someone wants to die, they should be able to die, whether it be suicide, assisted suicide, or what have you. I don't necessarily approve of family members choosing that for people though.

You don't have to make medical professionals kill people though. If they want to do it them self then they can find a way, but the state shouldn't encourage it by legitimizing the practicing and making people who would otherwise be healers kill people.

It certainly can be argued...particularly if the condition isn't fatal and will lead to prolonged suffering. All efforts should be made so that the person suffering retains as much dignity as possible.

Some doctors might support active euthanasia on utilitarian grounds. I'm not a utilitarian though :p

lot of emo's out there

white kids in particular kill themselves over the stupidest things http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2076557/Gabrielle-Joseph-Model-Gabby-16-killed-train-cancelled-cinema-date.html

would be fitting to have a message on her tombstone that reads "here lies a dumb cunt"

some level of intervention is needed
