If crustaceans have decentralized nervous systems, can they feel pain like a human can who has a centralized nervous system? And, if so, would that affect your decision to eat them? What if plants were conscious? Would that then bolster your position of eating meat by saying that all we eat must suffer for us to eat it and therefore vegetarians are no more to blame than meat eaters? I think this moral question, along with the question of consciousness of plants and crustaceans, is fertile ground for discussion.

I do not care what happens to food before i eat it, it has been shown in many studies that fish and crustaceans feel no pain though.

there are studies which hint at some fish being able to feel something similar to pain

the lobster problem is solved by cutting it in half in the longitudinal direction, though some people want their crustaceans intact so it's not always feasible

Even if plants were conscious and felt pain, etc (they aren't/don't), vegetarians would still have the moral high-ground since the animals you eat also have to be fed, and they eat around 5-10 times as much food as they "produce".

To many, the notion that we should care about the suffering of fish seems absurd.

For most, fish amount to little more than swimming protein, a healthy food to be plucked from rivers and seas.

But, as a disturbing new book shows, scientists are now confident that fish, once symbolic of dumb, primitive stupidity, do not only feel pain, but have a complex emotional life, too.

Indeed, as the book's author says, there is 'no logical reason why we should not extend to fish the same welfare considerations that we currently extend to birds and mammals'.

Do Fish Feel Pain? was written not by a militant vegan, but by a dispassionate marine biologist - who eats fish.

Obviously this doesn't mean anything, but apparently at least one marine biologist believes they have feelings.
