So my kid and I are finishing up some baseball practice today, when two guys, a woman, and two little kids come up with their unleashed pitbull. The dog proceeds to run straight at my kid growling. I yell at the dog, and it proceeds to come over at me and growl. At this point I ask the douchebag who is just standing their watching to "control your dog, please." Admittedly, I didn't use my "friendly" voice, but I was still pretty surprised by his response of "she's friendly"--while she continued growling at us. He then went on--without taking one step toward controlling his dog--to tell me she's never bitten anyone. He didn't take me seriously until I told them we were not going to be the first and grabbed a bat out out equipment bag, positioning myself between the dog and my kid--who was a bit scared the whole time--and staring right at him. Now naturally, at this point he apologized and ran over to put the legally required leash on his dog. Oh...wait...no--he proceeded to swear at me and tell what an idiot I was for overreacting to a pitbull growling at my kid. I'm glad I didn't have to bash the dog in the head, but I wouldn't have minded introducing this yahoo to Mr. Easton.
Anyway, what is it that makes people think that--since their dog doesn't bite them--it won't bite other people? And why in the world do they expect other people to take that chance? I've never met anyone who said "watch out, my unleashed dog bites," yet I'm pretty sure people still get bitten by dogs. This whole trend of needing to take your dogs with you everywhere you go baffles me. The trend of ignoring leash laws (not to mention laws about clean-up), is just downright infuriating.
