you're missing the main area of dispute: the key issue is that the left lays claim to have unilateral authority over what exactly is considered "offensive" and "racist".
particularly in recent years, the left has moved the goalpost further and further and weaponizes the once noble idea of political correctness to silence voices of dissent, to silence opinions which just a few years ago were considered acceptable. pushback against this culture war tactic is very well justified and does not per se constitute an abuse of free speech.
Does "the left" have a monopoly on what is offensive? Or do they just accurately convey what is offensive? If the backlash is large enough it doesn't seem like it matters what side ofthe political spectrum says the inciting incident is offensive, it is offensive as evidenced by the backlash.

probably because the right has most of the racist and offensive folks
i mean you did elected the leader of the incredibly racist birther movement as president you know
Also this. As much as "the right" would love us to ignore it, David Duke endorsed Trump and said he heard his coded messages of support loud and clear.
Whether Trump was sending those coded signals is another question, but if your message resonates with the KKK maybe you should reevaluate your messaging.
