As Widow said, he never let his son go into a bathroom until he was old enough to fend for himself just in case there was someone in there with malicious intentions. The obvious solution, first stated by Handcuffs, is to keep doing what you're already doing -- go into the genderless bathroom with your child. Hypothesized disaster averted.

Gee, it couldn't be because:
1) People drive (much) more overall time than they use public restrooms
2) More parents accompany their children in public restrooms
3) They are completely unrelated in both nature (accident vs. crime)
