I think lots of people have it a bit backwards. I would feel 10 times safer around a 16 year old that grew up being taught proper gun safety and the consequences of guns than around a 16 year old that found a gun and has never even seen a pretend gun before.

Why not teach how guns are supposed to be used safely and how dangerous they can be if misused?
If you know these dangers than its just a question of whether or not you value life when you consider killings. If you have a value for life and a knowledge of how to use guns safely than you arent just going to go around shooting people.
If you think guns are toys or are crazy than you just might.

Id rather be around the kid whos never seen a gun than the kid whos never seen a real gun but has a toy gun collection at home.

clearly the properly trained individual is the safest, but of all the toy gun owners in the world, id imagine a very small % of them are going through the training. fruther more, i feel almost as though children brought up being taught proper gun safty, would have their own hunting guns, and woudnt be very interested in toy guns.
