Partisan hackery aside, it would destabilize the current political situation, especially if Puerto Rico is admitted as a state. Regardless of how much you despise the Republican Party, they represent a significant portion of Americans, and a change that leads to ~30% of the nation having no effective federal power would be enormously problematic for the status quo, and I'm not sure Independents would side with the Democrats on this if they were perceived to be "crushing" their opposition by non-electoral means.
I don't see how admitting either D.C. or Puerto Rico to the union would be a change that would inherently lead to "30% of the nation having no effective federal power." I don't despise the Republican party, but if they're afraid that more people getting more voting power would make it harder on them then maybe they should finally fucking adapt to political environment so that they can be competitive in elections again, instead of pulling the same bullshit that they have been in response to various electoral drubbings.
Political parties win, adapt, or die. The Republicans need to learn how to adapt. Currently they spend most of their time trying to come up with harebrained schemes that'll disenfranchise voters instead of trying to come up with ways that will make them more appealing to the overall electorate so that more people will vote for them. They should cut that bullshit out and put their effort into focusing on how to become more competitive in elections regardless if we ever gave D.C. or PR statehood.
