The 'country is pro gay' but the 'segment that votes is very anti-gay'?
Come on, are you trying to be purposefully meaningless?

If the voting segment of the country is anti-gay, the country is anti-gay, by definition. Thats what votes mean, thats what they're for, thats what counts at the end of the day.
The majority of this country "voted" for Al Gore, does that matter either? No. Because how the states vote is what matters.
Well on state levels, how the people vote is what matters, and the people have overwhelmingly and consistently voted anti-gay on every single opportunity

Guess now if only 10% of a population votes, that suddenly represents the position of the entire country. Good to know how tight you can plug your ears though.

in excess of 90% of the country is extremely anti-gay, and believe in the sanctity of marriage between one man and one woman

you just never hear from 75% of them, because they dont answer stupid polls...
they just live their lives, and dont give 2 shakes about what others elsewhere are doing

Again, you don't realize that there is a giant self-selective bias in taking voting numbers as a sample of the entire country.  The country is pro-gay, but the segment of the country that votes is very anti-gay.  You can't extrapolate a self-selected sample out to the whole, that's like statistical bias 101

So, there are lots of people who support gay marriage but just not enough to spend 30 minutes voting for it?

Let's be realistic the majority of people fall somewhere between mildly opposed and "I just don't give a shit." If gay marriage can be voted down in California, it can be voted down anywhere. Doesn't mean it should be, Doesn't mean it won't change in the next 10-20 years, but be a little realistic about the current situation.

about half of eligible voters actually voted in the 2008 election
this doesnt factor in those without the franchise

and you're arguing that those people had a strong opinion, but half the country was just too busy that one day to spend 30 minutes voting? or to fill out an absentee ballot within the 2 months prior to the election?

strength of opinion isn't whats at issue here, its the actual opinion.

That opinion is pretty meaningless if it isn't expressed in a way that makes it relevant.

Chick-fil-a tastes good.

/edit and on a serious note, I think its cool that they took a stance and didn't just say they supported it because it would help them politically.

I wish Romney was like that...
