It's the few atheists who feel the need to push their beliefs (or lack thereof) that give the rest of them a bad name. Personally, I think it's retarded to be either atheist or religious. Both sides are extremes that we can't accurately measure as humans.

If you narrow atheism down to simply 'not believing in god' then you are an outright idiot.

If someone asked you why you were atheist, and you replied "Because I don't believe in god", if they had any intellect, they would shake their head in shame.
There are many religions/belief systems that do not particularly 'believe' in a god.
Do some research and live life a little bit before you declare yourself as something.

An atheist (generally speaking) is someone who opposes religion in it's whole.
Like I said, there are many religions that do not pay homage to a god eg. Buddhism.
Saying an atheist is someone who does not believe in god is like saying a religious person is someone who does.
It's a stereotypical generalisation.
