my try at that tut but i liked the Bw look to it

color lil monotonish

the biggest problem i have with this outcome is the lack of a background, i do not like the emptiness
the reason you prefer the b/w is because your colors arent done well, the yellow is too strong and it drowns out the sig which is not good, take another look at the coloring on Phil's outcome and you can see that it isnt drowned, it is just feels natural for the surrounding background
another thing bothering me is the sharpness contrasts with the guys face and his armor/effects, as if hes leaning back out of the direct field of vision, not only is it a weird effect, but it generally looks bad
some general tips about this tut:
first, it isn't just a random render on top of a random background with random effects
it is a selected render with a background that has similar colors and merges well with the concept of the render, and the effects add depth and help immerse the render into the piece
you should not just grab a render you like and then pick a background like "whatever it says to grab one", make sure the background fits with the render you want to use (good: link being in a forest, jack bauer being in nyc, the guy from dead space in space or on a spaceship. bad: link on a spaceship, mario in a fancy ballroom, you kind of get the idea).
in general, 3d fits better on 3d and 2d fits better with 2d, there are of course exception
NOTE: this is for this tut, i am not saying that every sig needs a stock background.
