The Magician
by bo.clerc

Things to know about the mage before starting.

The Mage is a different animal from the rest of the starter characters.
Strength is of no real value to you.
Dexterity is helpfull but i myself chose not to put anything to it.

For this build i am going to show you a ALL INT build that has taken me to the MQ twice.

These are the base stats you will start out with.

You start with 10 unallocated points. For this build put ALL 10 into Vitality.
After the initial 10 points you will receive 1 point per level, all of these go into INT
Doing this will give you 30 life and 60 magic per level
The amount of magic you gain will go up over time and at level 40 my mage was getting 30 Life (will stay the same) 100-103 Magic per level

Now onto the Gear.

For a level one, your gonna wanna look for gear like this.

All of this gear was on the MP for a total of 23 fg. There are cheaper items there but i included Mana per kill, and Mana per combat round.
Both of these are VERY handy and will lessen the time it takes your character to regenerate its mana.

The Main things to look for are
(It doesnt need to have ALL of these but a nice combo is most helpfull, But for the person with not so much FG a plain INT staff is just fine)

Weapon
  • Intelligence - See Definition of INT at the bottom of this Guide
  • Mana per Kill (LPK and LPCR would also be ok but remeber without mana you cant attack)
  • Mana per Comabt round
  • Max Magic
  • Magic Regen
  • Max Life - this is not totally important but its nice to have

Armor
  • Intelligence - See Definition of INT at the bottom of this Guide
  • Life per Kill
  • Life per Comabt round
  • Max Magic
  • Magic Regen
  • Max Life

Charm (Otherwise known as your weapon for a mage)
(Enhanced Effect is the most important thing on your charm. If you cant find a cheap enough charm with extra attributes then just plain EE will be enough)
  • Enhanced Effect - This is the most important thing to have on your charm. w/o this your damage will suffer.
  • Mana / Life per kill /combat round
  • Max Magic
  • Magic Regen
  • Max Life

Now, if you have the luxury of having alot of FG ( i didnt when i started LS) then you can pick and choose better items. But for the rest of you that dont want to invest alot into there are plenty of reasonably priced items on the Market Place to make you one very effective Mage.

Intelligence:
- Adds to Max Magic at level up
- Increases offensive damage of spells (charms)
- Increases defensive vs. spells cast at you (hidden value, not shown)
- Items that give +Intelligence do not increase your Magic Points!

Life/Magic per Round:
- Items can grant a + to Life and/or Magic per round. These items will heal you per combat round.
- The effectiveness of the heal is random 1 to your value, modified by the relative strength of the monster your are fighting.
- If you fight monsters of a lesser level than yourself, this heal factor is greatly deteriorated.

Enhanced Effect item mod:
- On Weapons, increases the damage by the % listed
- On Armor, increases the defense by the % listed
- On Charms, increases the spell damage by the % listed

Why Magician?
by hedonism

There are several advantages and disadvantages to being a caster. The only disadvantage is that because you use magic, you will have to regenerate both your magic and life bars. This can be time consuming, but can easily be fixed with some regeneration gear.

Here is the advantage of being a caster:

Melee characters have two stats that affect their damage. Strength, and Dexterity. Intelligence, used by casters, is the only stat that is needed to boost magic damage! By going caster, you save yourself a lot of stat points to distribute where you like.

nice guide, might be helpful to note that in the first 10-15 levels, it is cheaper and usually quicker to use mele items and than shift to doing magic damage later
