1) Guide Purpose:

This guide will attempt to show you a large amount of information related to IAS calculation. I had previously built my Faith-based guided arrow Amazon incorrectly because I did not know the material I learned through this investigation. Through the use of said Amazon wielding a Faith Matriarchal Bow as its primary example (with other examples used for testing purposes), this guide will specifically show you all the IAS information you will need to know to build fast attack based characters.

2) Guide Terms/Vernacular:
Increased Attack Speed (IAS) – general term for any form of increased attack speed).
Skill Increased Attack Speed (SIAS) – IAS granted by Skills (see section 4).
Gear Increased Attack Speed (GIAS) – IAS from Gear (NOT greatly increased attack speed!).
Effective Increased Attack Speed (EIAS) – Cumulative IAS (see sections 6 and 7).
Weapon Speed Modifier (WSM) – The base speed of a weapon (see section 3).
Frames Per Attack (FPA) – The number of frames used to animate a single attack.
Attacks Per Second (APS) – 25 Frames Per Second divided by Frames Per Attack.
Breakpoint (BP) – The required number of GIAS or EIAS to achieve a certain number of Frames Per Attack.
Test Statistic (TS) – What I am trying to test in each equation of section 8.

3) Weapon Speed Moderator (WSM) Explanation:
In this section I will use a Barbarian and a Sorceress for examples to illustrate the idea of WSM.
Weapon Speed Moderator is the effects on the base speed of a weapon that can only be modified by IAS located on a weapon. The following correlation chart that I once believed was true is actually very false:
CODE
Categories of Weapon Speed Moderators:
Weapon Speed Name      |Weapon Speed Moderator
-----------------------+----------------------
Phase Blade            | -30
Very Fast Attack Speed | -20
Fast Attack Speed      | -10
Normal Attack Speed    |   0
Slow Attack Speed      |  10
Very Slow Attack Speed |  20
-----------------------+----------------------
<--So don’t go by this! It’s wrong!
To explain this better: Certain weapons are more effective in certain character classes' hands. The listed speed ('slow,'very fast,' etc.) is relative to other weapons for that specific character. Weapon Speed descriptions (Weapon Speed Mod 1), as well as their actual swing rate (Weapon Speed Mod 2), can change for a weapon when wielded by two different character classes. Example: A Berserker Axe is listed in the “fast” category for every character except the Sorceress, who has a “normal” attack speed listed. The listed speeds ('slow, 'very fast,' etc.) further describe a range of speeds; a 'fast' dagger might be slightly slower than a 'fast' mace, but both will be faster than a 'normal' club. This categorical system runs off of the idea that each item is placed in a name category (WSM1, as described above) and a number category (WSM2). The name category is Diablo’s version for visually allowing you to see the relative speed that can be derived from a weapon by adding IAS to it. Weapons’ name category can be altered, but only by adding IAS directly onto the weapon itself, and even then the weapon is not truly moved into a faster category of weapons. Example: a Barbarian wielding a War Pike, category “very slow” and WSM=20, whom turns that War Pike into a Breath of the Dying (which gives +60%IAS) and reequips it will show “very fast attack speed,” but still only be able to speed the weapon up to it’s cap of 10FPA. To wrap up the name category (WSM1), it’s useless. It’s just a name that doesn’t mean anything.
WSM2 is the number aspect of the weapon, which does not change when you add IAS to the weapon. When numbers are listed for Weapon Speeds such as [0], [-20], [20], the higher the number is, the slower the Weapon Speed. So, [20] is the slowest of the Weapon Speeds, and [-20] is the fastest. Refer to [URL= http://www.battle.net/diablo2exp/items/weaponsandarmor.shtml#elite]Arreat Summit’s Item Pages[/URL] to locate the WSMs of whatever weapons you are looking for. This number is what is factored into the equation, negatively. This means if your weapon starts as a listed [-20], when you plug it into the formula you will get a positive number 20 to add to the rest of your EIAS factors.

There are only two skills that I can confirm rely solely on weapon speed (and SIAS) during attacks:
Whirlwind
Assassin Trap Laying
I have heard conflicting reports on the following skills, but the last things I have heard of them is that their speed is not weapon-only (or I cannot find a web site to support that claim):
Smite
Dragon Talon
Dragon Tail

Assassin Trap Lying:
The best two claw types to use for trap laying are: Runic Talons, and Greater Talons because of their base [-30] WSM. If you cannot get a +3 Traps/+x Lightning Sentry Runic Talon or Greater Talon; Feral Claws, Blade Talons, and Greater Claws are the second best options because they have [-20] WSM.
CODE
IAS Breakdown of Trap Lying with a Runic Talon:

IAS |FPA |APS
----+----+----
0 % |12  |2
5 % |11  |2.2
19 %|10  |2.5
42 %|9   |2.7
----+----+----

42%IAS on the claw OR base Runic Talon speed and a level 3 Burst of Speed will satisfy the 9FPA breakpoint.
CODE
IAS Breakdown of Trap Lying with a Feral Claw:

IAS |FPA |APS
----+----+----
0 % |13  |1.9
5 % |12  |2
16 %|11  |2.2
34 %|10  |2.5
63 %|9   |2.7
----+----+----

63%IAS on the claw OR base feral claw speed and a level 7 Burst of Speed will satisfy the 9FPA breakpoint. Mix, match whatever you like…

I will refer to Arreat Summit to discuss Whirlwind a bit: In Diablo II: Lord of Destruction, Whirlwind is affected by weapon speed as follows. After you click to start your Whirlwind attack, the game checks for a hit on a target in range at the 4th and 8th animation frames (recall that the game runs at 25 frames per second). After the first two "free" hit-checks, the frames elapsed in-between subsequent hit-checks will depend on your weapon speed. Note: increased attack speed from items outside your weapon DOES NOT affect whirlwind - only the speed of the weapon itself counts. The dependence on weapon speed is obtained by subtracting your weapon's increased attack speed (IAS) to its base weapon speed (the number between square brackets listed in the weapons section of the Arreat Summit) and checking where the number you obtain fits in the following table:
CODE
One-handed weapons
Breakpoints: 15, 10, -10, -35.
Number of frames in-between hit-checks after frame 8: 12, 10, 8, 6, 4
Two-handed weapons
Breakpoints: 15, 0, -10, -30, -60.
Number of frames in-between hit-checks after frame 8: 14, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4

Examples:
#1 War pike of quickness (two-handed weapon)
Base weapon speed: 20
Weapon increased attack speed: 40
Whirlwind speed: 20 - 40 = -20
Breakpoint reached: -10
Number of frames in-between checks: 8
Hit-checks at frames 4, 8, 16, 24, 32, etc.
#2 Falchion (one-handed weapon)
Base weapon speed: 20
Weapon increased attack speed: 0
Whirlwind speed: 20 - 0 = 20
Breakpoint reached: none
Number of frames in-between checks: 12
Hit-checks at frames: 4, 8, 20, 32, 44, etc.
#3 Grandfather colossus blade with 'Shael' (one-handed weapon)
Base weapon speed: 5
Weapon increased attack speed: 20
Whirlwind speed: 5 - 20 = -15
Breakpoint reached: -10
Number of frames in-between checks: 6
Hit-checks at frames: 4, 8, 14, 20, 26, etc.

Note: two-handed swords are treated as one-handed weapons for Whirlwind purposes, regardless of the sword being held in one-handed or two-handed mode. The above calculation for Grandfather therefore holds for any way the sword is held.

4) The Misconception of Skill Increased Attack Speed (SIAS):
SIAS comes from any of the following skills:
Fanaticism
Frenzy
Burst of Speed
Werewolf

The following argument is WRONG, but it is what caused me to research this topic. The correct Weapon Speed Calculation Formula (below) reveals a better understanding of how different types of IAS impact final weapon speed.

Here's some compiled screenshots of the charts from the calculator vs. Arreat Summit's fanaticism chart:

If you investigate the fanaticism option of IAS calculators you will quickly find that there is something strange going on. Compare the amount of IAS the calculator suggests a level 1 fanaticism adds versus a level 15 fanaticism and compare the difference to the accurate numbers provided by Arreat Summit. If you select an Amazon using a matriarchal bow and ONLY change the IAS (would be GIAS from other items as faith only adds fanaticism, put 0 in for fanaticism) you need 142%ias to claim 7 frames per attack. If you put a level one fanaticism you only need 90 IAS from items to get 7fpa. Since when has a level 1 fanaticism added 53%ias? Let's keep going... if you have a level 15 fanaticism you only need 45%ias from items to achieve 7fpa. Since when has the difference between level one and fifteen fanaticism been 45%ias?
Now let's consult Arreat Summit:
Level one fanaticism adds +14% to your IAS.
Level fifteen fanaticism adds +33% to your IAS.
End of flawed argument
Here’s the kicker that sheds light on this situation: the IAS that’s added by fanaticism is Skill Increased Attack Speed and it is, therefore, added into the equation at a different place than Gear IAS.

5) The Weapon Speed Calculation Formula:
EIAS = [(120 x GIAS) / (120 + GIAS)] + SIAS – WSM
Refer to section two for terms list.

6) Explanation of Effective Increased Attack Speed (EIAS):
Effective Increased Attack Speed (EIAS) is the final calculated number that determines your character’s attack speed with a weapon by relating character class, weapon type, increased attack speed from gear, and increased attack speed from skills to frame per attack. Each EIAS is specific to one Frames Per Attack rate for one character class wielding a certain class of weapon in a specific attack. If you remove all SIAS, but counteract that deficit with addition of the appropriate GIAS to keep the same FPA, you will still calculate the same EIAS using the equation; the reverse is also true. (See section 8 – Formula Tests #1 & 2, as well as the Amazon 7FPS EIAS Multiple Bow Test

7) EIAS Breakpoints’ Relation to GIAS Breakpoints:
Here’s the BPs for a Bow Amazon (I modified it to include the Gear IAS BPs with and without a level 15 fanaticism):

8) Put the Formula to the Test Using Previously Known IAS Statistics:
Formula Test #1(Part 1):
Known IAS Statistic: Amazon using a mundane (white) Matriarchal Bow (no fanaticism = no SIAS), and has +142 GIAS.
Test Statistic: This test will find the corresponding EIAS BP that suits the FPA we’re looking for (in this case, it is 7FPA).
EIAS = [(120x142)/(120+142)] + 0 - (-10)
EIAS = [17,040/262] + 10
EIAS = 65.038 + 10
EIAS = 75.038
Formula Test #1(Part 2):
Known IAS Statistic: Amazon using a mundane (white) Matriarchal Bow (WSM=-10, SIAS=0) with +142 GIAS will hit 7FPA (75 EIAS).
Test Statistic: Will an Amazon using a Faith Matriarchal Bow (-10WSM) with a level 15 fanaticism (33 SIAS) and +44% GIAS have a 7fpa normal attack at 75 EIAS?
EIAS = [(120x44)/(120+44)] + 33 - (-10)
EIAS = [5280/164] + 43
EIAS = 32.195 + 43
EIAS = 75.195
Tested formula and found it to be working properly. Amazon 7FPA Normal Bow Attack for a faith and mundane matriarchal bow is 75.
Formula Test #2 (Part 1):
Known IAS Statistic: The GIAS BP for 4FPA Zeal Paladin with a Berserker Axe (WSM=0) is 200.
Test Statistic: Find EIAS for 4FPA Zeal Paladin with a Berserker Axe that’s not using fanaticism.
EIAS = [(120x200)/(120+200)] + 0 - 0
EIAS = [24,000/320] + 0
EIAS = 75
Formula Test #2 (Part 2):
Known IAS Statistic: EIAS of a 4FPA Zeal Paladin with a Berserker Axe with no fanaticism is 75.
Test Statistic: Is the EIAS for a 4FPA Zeal Paladin with a Berserker Axe and a Level 20 Fanaticism the same as that of one that doesn’t use fanaticism.
SIAS = 4fpa zeal attack
EIAS = [(120x60)/(120+60)] + 35 - (0)
EIAS = [7200/180] + 35
EIAS = 40 + 35
EIAS = 75
Reinforced that the formula does work, plus found the EIAS for 4FPA zealots using a one handed weapon.
Amazon 7FPS EIAS Multiple Bow Test:
Known IAS Statistic: An Amazon using a mundane or Faith Matriarchal Bow with 7fpa will have 75 EIAS.
Test Statistic: An Amazon using a mundane Grand Matron Bow[10] with 7fpa will have 75 EIAS.
EIAS = [(120x292)/(120+292)] + (0) - (10)
EIAS = [35040/412] - 10
EIAS = 85.049 - 10
EIAS = 75.049
Known IAS Statistic: Amazon Normal Attack, Spider Bow, 240 GIAS, no SIAS, has 7FPA
Test Statistic: an Amazon using a mundane Spider Bow[5] with 7FPA will have 75 EIAS.
EIAS = [(120x240)/(120+240)] + 0 – 5
EIAS = [28,800/360] - 5
EIAS = 80 – 5
EIAS = 75
Thus proving that all bows hit 7FPA for an Amazon at 75 EIAS.
Zeal Paladin 4FPA EIAS Test:
Known IAS Statistic: Paladin Zeal with a Phase Blade, WSM=-30, GIAS=11, SIAS=35.
Test Statistic: Find EIAS for 4FPA zeal with a Phase Blade, 11%GIAS, and a level 20 fanaticism.
EIAS = [(120x11)/(120+11)] + 35 - (-30)
EIAS = [1320/131] + 35 +30
EIAS = 10.076 + 65
EIAS = 75.076
4FPA Paladin Zeal EIAS statistic confirmed at 75.
One Handed vs. Two Handed Axes Test:
Known IAS Statistic: An Amazon using a mundane Grand Matron Bow with 7fpa will have 75 EIAS. Thus proving that all bows hit 7FPA for an Amazon at 75 EIAS.
Known IAS Statistic: EIAS of a 4FPA Zeal Paladin with a Berserker Axe with and without fanaticism is 75.
Known IAS Statistic: Zeal Paladin + Level 20 Fanaticism(SIAS=35) + Decapitator[10] + 32%GIAS = 6FPA.
Test Statistic: Will the highest EIAS for a two handed axe (Decapitator) be the same as a one handed axe (Berserker Axe)?
EIAS = [(120x32)/(120+32)] + 35 - (10)
EIAS = [3840/152] + 35 -10
EIAS = 25.263 + 25
EIAS = 50.263
No, because the two weapons were not at the same FPA.
Druid vs. Amazon Spider Bow Max EIAS Normal Attack Test:
Known IAS Statistic: Druid Normal Attack, Spider Bow[5], 147 GIAS, no SIAS, 9FPA
EIAS = [(120x147)/(120+147)] + 0 – 5
EIAS = [17640/267] - 5
EIAS = 61.067
Known IAS Statistic: Amazon Normal Attack, Spider Bow, 240 GIAS, no SIAS, 7FPA
EIAS = [(120x240)/(120+240)] + 0 – 5
EIAS = [28,800/360] - 5
EIAS = 80 – 5
EIAS = 75
No, because the two have different FPA. Retest with a 9FPA Amazon icon_pointr.gif
Known IAS Statistic: Amazon Normal Attack, Spider Bow, 75 GIAS, no SIAS, 9FPA
Test Statistic: EIAS of 9FPA Amazon bow attack will equal EIAS of 9FPA Druid bow attack.
EIAS = [(120x75)/(120+75)] + 0 – 5
EIAS = [9000/195] - 5
EIAS = 46.154 – 5
EIAS = 41.154
No, EIAS BPs are class specific, even for the same weapons at the same FPAs.

9) Conclusions:
  • The calculators are accurate, but there are a few unfinished areas. Example: a Druid wielding a Phase Blade using the Werewolf attack Fury with a level 1 Werewolf shows FPA breakpoints for 8FPA to 4FPA, but adding 35%GIAS (equivalent on the chart is 6%IAS over that required for 5FPA) or more displays a [/color[color=red]further ias useless message with 7FPA as the current weapon speed. However, if you make Werewolf level 20 the same further ias useless message appears even with 0GIAS, but the associated chart shows that the attack can go up to 4FPA with 61%GIAS added.I have sent an e-mail to the creator of the calculator asking him for a comment on this and suggesting to him that he should correct it with the proper information, but I have not yet received a response. For the time being, use the chart information as the correct interpretation. Ill update this in a post if he responds telling me differently.
  • Attack speed is affected by character class, a weapons base speed modifier, skill increased attack speed, and gear increased attack speed.
  • Skills, such as fanaticism and zeal, allow weapons to reach speeds otherwise unreachable by just adding gear IAS alone.
  • Character classes have a natural mastery (of sorts) of different weapons that allow them to attack faster with certain weapons and slower with others. Example: a Werewolf Druid using Fury attack needs 91% GIAS to hit 4FPA with a Berserker Axe, while a Paladin using Zeal and level 20 Fanaticism needs 60% GIAS to hit 4FPA with a Berserker Axe.
  • Under the same conditions in character class, attack skill, and skill IAS; weapons with the same WSM require the same amount of GIAS for maximum weapon speed. Example: A Paladin using Zeal with a level 20 Fanaticism hits 4FPA with a Berserker Axe with 60%GIAS, while a Paladin using zeal with a level 20 Fanaticism also hits 4FPA with a Pilum with 60%GIAS.

I have tried my best to cover everything in this guide relating to IAS calculation. If you can think of anything that Ive left out, please post regarding it including a link to where your information is coming from.

I put in over 60 hours to complete this. Appreciation is always welcome in the form of forum gold. wink.gif

Thanks Gencoider. Donations are always nice:), but I'm more interested in this guide helping people than getting donations for making it.

Throw speeds, anyone got any ideas? The inDiablo.de calculator does not have throw speeds and I don't know how to factor it into the equation. I know a barbarian's double-throw is factored, but not a javelin throw or a "standard throw attack." Please post if you've got any useful information.
I'm sure they're not considered casting skills because I've seen IAS affect throwing speed.

I'm pretty sure that throw speed breakpoints are the same as standard attack's. It would be pretty easy to test i'll try it in a second.

by the way very well put together guide smile.gif alot of useful info
