My acomdata external HDD finally decided to completely die on me while I was in the process of backing it up to something that wasn't my main hdd.
My back up was recent enough that all that I've lost would be some English dub Hellsing ultimate episodes that I've already watched and wouldn't have much trouble reacquiring and some pictures.

When it is on it just makes a ticking noise and the light stays red. I'm thinking it is the motor combined with some bad sectors.
Now I don't know what to do with it. The encasing doesn't want to come off and I've striped one of the screws. I'd like to recycle it or something rather than beating it with a hammer and throwing it in the garbage. I don't really know how to go about "properly" recycling/disposing of it.

Its called the click of death, the only thing to do is send it to a recovery center , and maybe do a head replacement.


To dispose, you can open the harddrive up, steal the magnets for your fridge, and use the platters as shaving mirrors.

the cheapest solution is to simply buy a new harddrive....companies that recover data, charge more than a new HD will cost...in general...you MIGHT find some mom & pop comp store that can do it for you cheaper...but I doubt it.

As for recycling old comp parts...just google recycling computer parts...and try to find a cheap or free place.
Altho HD's don't really have anything inside (besides your data) which wil, harm the environment.....Markie has the right idea for HD disposal

That pretty much sums it up, but a recovery center is just insane....insane amounts of $$ wich only large companies would do for critical date.( even then theirs no real guarantee it will be totally recovered)

Best Buy's data recovery center starts at $259 for a level 1 data recovery, $599 for a level 2, and $1,999 for a level 3.
If the hard drive is clicking, you are looking at the latter price.

Beat it with a hammer and give it to Best Buy to recycle for free.
